As with many schools built in the 1930s, regular upgrades are needed to ensure systems remain effective. We were appointed to undertake a review of the existing boiler room at the Alperton Community School upper site and produce a detailed survey of the condition of the boiler room. This was used to support a Condition Improvement Funding (CIF) bid which helped fund boiler upgrade works of the previous open vented floor standing oil boiler fed system, which was reaching the end of its economic life.
A full heating plant replacement was designed and installed, including a new 1MB modular gas boiler plant to serve this large school. The heating design had to take into consideration the flue routing to roof level via a lightwell area, plus incorporate a plate heat exchanger to protect the new boiler plant against the retained heating distribution system.
The design provided new modern plant room controls, as well ensuring sufficient high and low level ventilation to the space, which was located on the lower ground. The plant room was known to contain asbestos, including within the boiler gaskets and this had to be carefully managed.
